Activities
Each day's activities are planned and organized to provide just the right balance of education and fun so that our program is not an extension of the school day, but an enhancement to your child's daily routine. Academic enrichment such as chemistry allows students to learn with hands on experiential education techniques. Sports, games and outdoor activities help children develop fine and gross motor skills, teamwork, and physical fitness. While arts and craft projects allow kids to express their creative ideas freely. YMCA School Age Program activities also include homework support, weekly swim lessons, arts & humanities, environmental education and community service projects. The YMCA of Norwalk SACC curriculum focuses on the intentionality of the daily activities in all aspects of a program; and uses the overall quality of the program to reach the desired outcome of fostering the child's overall development. School Age Programs offer seven core areas:
- Homework Support & Academic Enrichment
- Literacy/Literature
- Character Development
- Health & Fitness
- Socialization
- Arts & Humanities
- Science/Technology
Quality
The YMCA of Norwalk is part of the After School Achievement Program a collaborative effort with the Norwalk Public Schools and Norwalk Education Foundation to provide high quality before and afterschool programs throughout the City of Norwalk. The YMCA of Norwalk understands that the programs quality depends on the staff working with your child on a daily basis. All YMCA SACC staff have gone through extensive state and federal background checks and successfully passed a drug screening prior to working in our program. In addition, the YMCA has increased our hiring state certified teachers and Norwalk Public Schools Teachers Aids to improve the academic link between the school day activities and the SACC program. Our quality instructors for swim lessons, academic enrichment, soccer instruction and arts and humanities coordinator help balance our programs academic and enrichment components to fit with our mission of a child's overall development.
